Mac or Linux?

26 08 2007

I read an article over on zdnet and it got me thinking…

If you were to ditch Windows, would you go to Linux or Mac? by ZDNet’s Adrian Kingsley-Hughes — Here’s a question for all you Windows users out there. Let’s say that you were to switch from Windows to either the Linux platform or the Mac platform, which would you choose?

With the release of Vista, I’m at a fork in the road as far as what is next in regards to my Operating System. I’ve been playing with Linux since 01/02 and I have seen it progress very well, but in my opinion still falls short of OS X or Windows XP. I’ve had a number of discussions with close friends of mine who are in the IT field about what is next, and the general consensus among us is that when Microsoft stops supportting Windows XP, we will jump ship to Apple. I personally like Macs, though expensive there is greater software support for OS X than there is for Linux currently. I could only hope that changes between now and the time MS stops supportting XP, but I won’t hold my breath.

I ‘m an Ubuntu Junkie. I’ve used Mandrake and Fedora Core for long periods of time, but I came back to Ubuntu. I dabble with live CD’s when I’m in the mood to see what is available and what has changed since I last dabbled. I’ve grown fond of Zen Linux, and really love anything done with XFCE, and I feel that Zen Linux does it best, but I have come back to Ubuntu. I use Gnome with Ubuntu as I feel that Xubuntu just misses the ball compared to Zen Linux as afar as XFCE is concerned.

I’ve used Ubuntu since 5.x, and have seen it progress into something that I feel can compete with Windows and OS X IN A COUPLE OF YEARS. The steps that have been made are in my opinion the right direction from a user’s standpoint. The lack of software support by major manufacturers and hardware support from manufacturers holds Linux back from being a major contender in the OS game. I use CS3, and due to the lack of support for Linux, my only choice is Windows or OS X. I also feel that Open Office does do 90% of everything the common person needs to do in Office, it is lacking compared to Office 2k7. Refine it, and it would be a solid contender.

I have thought about loading up VMWare on my notebook. I’d run 7.04 for my Main OS and load XP into VMWare — Problem with this? Again, the lack of support by MS for XP (when MS stops supporting XP), but it may be what I turn to as I have too much money tied up into Windows Software.

Just my .03 cents

I felt I needed to support this cause. It’s sad to see business done like this, it is hard enough to find quality web hosting, but when your webhosting company does this to you, what’s the world coming to?

So here it is… http://www.avidhosting.org/
